The Daughter and Dad Discuss... Podcast
A Daughter and her Dad discuss tabletop games and the books, movies, stories and history that inspire them. Thoughtful, cozy, a little chaotic and a lot nerdy – just like a good family discussion (if you have a family of nerds).
Over a lifetime Daughter (a millennial) and Dad (a boomer) have shared a love of travel, history, fantastic worlds and board games. In laid back discussions centering around a specific game, they talk about the world that game is based on and how the game reflects that world as they see it. The discussions range from books and movies to life experiences and family dynamics. Thoughtful discussion alternates with geeky digressions ranging from profound to silly.
Come and explore fabulous games with us and the worlds they inhabit!

Dad and daughter review The Witches, a 2013 Martin Wallace game set in Terry Pratchett's Discworld. Players take on trainee witches traveling the map of Lanker to solve easy and hard problems using dice, cards, and thematic actions.
Dad starting reading Discworld books during breaks in rehearsals of an opera he was in in 2003 He's read all of them and virtually all of Terry Pratchett's other work. Like Brother Oats with Om, he is a gentle but persistent proselytizer for Pratchett's work. In desperation Daughter and other members of the family have read them to make him happy.
DAD NOTE: Don't let them kid you. They love Discworld, too. As far as the Opera goes, I was just in the Chorus. But it helps explain why Maskerade is my favorite Discworld book.
The game balances charming lore—Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, and the power of three—with mechanical risks: cackle tokens, Black Alice penalties, crisis tokens, and a dice-heavy resolution system. It’s thematic, family-friendly, and leans toward luck-driven gameplay.
Highlights include a gorgeous map, teamwork via tea actions to discard cackles, and the advice to build cards and seek the power of three before tackling hard problems.
There are hard problems and easy problems. Check the Easter Egg for the Hard Problem Daughter is trying to solve.

In this episode of Daughter and Dad Discuss, we dive into Martin Wallace’s 2011 board game Ankh-Morpork and how it captures Terry Pratchett’s Discworld. We talk characters, guilds, and how the action cards reflect the books — from Death and the Librarian to Cut-Me-Own-Throat Dibbler and the Watch.
Highlights include a quick overview of gameplay (minions, buildings, interrupt cards, green vs. brown decks, and random events like the dragon), commentary on Pratchett’s journalistic voice versus Tolkien, the art by Paul Kidby, and practical notes — it plays 2–4 players in about an hour and is out of print but beloved by fans.
Dad started reading Discworld books during breaks in rehearsals of an opera he was in in 2003. He's read all of them and virtually all of Terry Pratchett's other work. Like Brother Oats revealing the truth of Om, he is a gentle but persistent proselytizer for Pratchett's work. In desperation Daughter and other members of the family have read them to make him happy.

Don't miss the Easter Egg with a special appearance of Discworld's readers' (but not characters') favorite anthropomorphic personification - Death!
